This collapsed volcano is located inside the Chimborazo Fauna Production Reserve, home to alpacas and vicuñas, surrounded by Andean páramo landscapes and offering spectacular views of Chimborazo Volcano on clear days.
The expedition combines high-altitude trekking across the páramo and a short technical glacier section, making it suitable for climbers with good physical condition and basic acclimatization.

DETAILED ITINERARY
DAY 1 | TRANSFER TO BASECAMP AND ACCLIMATIZATION
Altitude of the area: 4,200 m / 13,780 ft
Average temperature: 2 – 5 °C / 36 – 41 °F
Departure from Riobamba at 11:30 AM towards the community of Mechahuasca (approximately 1.5 hours), located between Carihuairazo and Chimborazo. During the drive you can observe alpacas, vicuñas, and the spectacular Andean páramo landscapes.
In the afternoon, an optional acclimatization hike is organized across the high-altitude páramo with panoramic views of surrounding volcanoes.

Dinner is served in the community refuge, followed by early rest using thermal sleeping bags.
DAY 2 | SUMMIT ASCENT OF CARIHUAIRAZO VOLCANO

The day begins very early with a wake-up call at 2:30 AM, followed by a light breakfast. At 3:00 AM, the team starts the ascent toward the summit of Carihuairazo Volcano under the stars of the Andeansky.
The route initially crosses high-altitude páramo terrain, gradually gaining elevation until reaching the glacier entrance at approximately 4,750 m / 15,583 ft. Here, climbers put on crampons and glacierequipment, and the group is roped together for safety before entering the final technical section.
The last part of the climb involves snow and ice slopes between 30° and 40°, with short sections that can reach up to 45°, providing an exciting and rewarding glacier climbing experience.
Reaching the summit offers spectacular panoramic views of the Ecuadorian Andes, including the impressive Chimborazo Volcano, as well as vast high-altitude landscapes stretching across the Andeanplateau.
After enjoying the summit and taking photos, the group begins the descent back to Basecamp, where a hot soup and short rest await.
Afterwards, the return journey begins with transportation back to Riobamba, arriving at approximately 1:00 PM.

The ascent of Carihuairazo Volcano (5,018 m / 16,463 ft) is a high-altitude mountaineering expedition that includes glacier progression, technical terrain, sub-zero temperatures, and rapidly changingweather conditions typical of the Ecuadorian Andes.
To ensure safety, comfort, and performance during the expedition, it is essential to have the appropriate high-mountain equipment. Part of the basic technical glacier gear is provided by the expedition, whilethe rest must be brought by each participant.
Having the proper equipment allows climbers to face cold temperatures, strong winds, snow, ice, and sudden weather changes, which are common during the ascent of Carihuairazo.

PREPARATION BEFORE THE CLIMB
